A History of Gulet Cruises in Turkey
The Blue Cruise, also known as the Blue Voyage ("Mavi Yolculuk" in Turkish) is a term used for the recreational boating tours along the Turkish Riviera on Turkey's southwestern coast, with connotations in tourism and literature. The term is used by Turkey's tourism industry. It was derived from the title of a 1957 book by Azra Erhat.
The term was first introduced into the Turkish literature by a handful of Turkish writers, such as Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı (alias The Fisherman of Halicarnassus), Sabahattin Eyüboğlu (together with his circle of family and friends), and especially artists such as Azra Erhat, the translator into Turkish of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Those who united around the literary revue "Yeni Ufuklar" (New Horizons) in the 1950s and 1960s have also contributed to the popularity of the Blue Cruise.
A full Blue Cruise generally starts in Didim, or Kuşadası, although many tours often depart from Bodrum. They usually terminate at the port of Antalya. The term may also be used to refer to shorter tours along the southwestern coast of Turkey, which was known as Lycia in antiquity.
The Turkish Riviera (also known popularly as the Turquoise Coast) is a term used to define an area of southwest Turkey encompassing Antalya, Muğla and to a lesser extent the provinces of Aydın, southern İzmir and western Mersin. The combination of a favorable climate, warm sea, more than a thousand kilometers of shoreline along the Aegean and Mediterranean waters, and abundant natural and archeological points of interest makes this stretch of Turkey’s coastline a popular national and international tourist destination.
Among the archeological points of interest are two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - the ruins of the Mausoleum of Maussollos in Halicarnassus and the remains of the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, which can still be seen today.[ |
